Dan Torres Guitar Mod micro and restores
By Mark Grove
Co-writer: Dee Curtis
29.02.04 Article Back Catalogue wanted by readers
When you hear the name Dan Torres and microphones in the music industry, the ears tend to perk up or van is a joke it.I know is wrong. And policy makers as a pickup-Seymour Duncan and Di Marzio tend to take note. Introduction of this article and information about Dan Torres the amplifier and the Master collection of California, is the Canadian Guitar Player Music Consultant Dee Curtis.
The first time I heard Dan Torres was when I was in Los Angeles in the early 80's with a group of musicians, who spoke of Dan Torres, who was and still is a guitar guru moding, moding their amps and guitars for them.
These guys at the time had contacted through an ad in Dan (Guitar Player) when mail order was the rage in the music business. So I sent for information on how to hop on your guitar and make mods to your amp, through its free booklets, and eventually obtain reprints of articles that were (Vintage Guitar).
I had a little electronic know how both what was good, but nothing tube amps. But through some articles I started tinkering with capacitors and resistors in the amp head along with changing tubes, to reshape the sound coming through the cabin. I ended up using the control switch mid-range tone on every guitar I had at the time. Currently, I am not use them and I miss them.Dan is one of the best experts on the amp and changing the guitar and use a lot of great musicians.
Most recently, I contacted Dan about my (Sovtek Midget Combo Amp) and asked what he recommended as the Sovtek tubes sounded a little dark for me. I had some Sovtek comments on this issue and made some mods, but it was still too dark sounding.
I the amp, but I wanted more brightness and cleaner tones. Dan suggested I try (Tubes 6L6 GC) that will give me the end clearer and less high mid-range and dark tones. I have to order now and I know it will sound beautiful.
Now, anyone who is a player guitar or bass, I implore you to get Dan Torres book (Inside tube amps), which is literally the Bible on tube amps, and it is in terms simple for everyone to understand how - mod their amp or guitar.
Mark Grove: We first started this article with an intro how Dee Curtis was first introduced to the amp and the master himself, Dan Torres collection, but we will end this section where we originally wanted to go, and it is talking about Dan Torres take on the restoration of microphones and the fact that he was one technicians first to start rewinding pickups for musicians, California. Dan also has a line of single-coil pickups and custom made, with new known (Torres P90) and custom Humbuckers - as well as medium and micro SRV blues.
This man is the master of tone control pickup and other gurus like Bill Turner (founder and EMG pickup resident experts for Fender. In this interview with Dan Torres we will launch in the restoration of collection and how to keep these vintage microphones just "hummin 'along.
<a href="http://www.torresengineering.com"> www.torresengineering.com </ A> This is an uber "cool" site for gamers
I know another bad line. Dan is also known for his amp kits and construction guitar which are very popular for the more skilled player. This will be an interview you want to archive your e-mail or on the website, so be prepared to be surprised by fellow musicians Dan Torres. Canadian Guitar Player talks to Dan Torres on the complexities of collecting and restoring when to throw the old heap.
MG: At what point has a vintage pickup regular or for that matter it has survived its usefulness and mechanical wise?
DT: Actually, since early magnetic pickups, virtually none of them have actually worn. Even the first microphones, unless damaged, are still functional and mechanically sound wise.
MG: What is the most common form of wear and tear collection that must be addressed when restoring a pick-up?
DT: The most common focus is the usury of the user. Choose damage to the top of the van, is pricked with screwdrivers, screws and stripped the results of abuse. The magnets and materials can rust a bit of an instrument that is allowed to become wet. Rust can cause the magnets out of contact with the pole pieces, causing the pickup to stop working correctly.
<a href="http://www.torresengineering.com"> www.torresengineering.com </ a>
MG: Is re-magnetize an important collection to return the original support and pull string sound?
DT: This is a very sensitive issue that the tonal character to target our most popular guitars (and trucks) is based on these instruments is old when they were used / stored. This is - No one - not to seek a 1959 Gibson Les Paul with patented Hum-bucking pickups to play "How High The Moon" (a hit for Les Paul years 50) they are trying to play "Sunshine of Your Love" (Clapton "or" One Way Out "(Allman Bros")
The guitars which are the most valuable were in their "second life" that the instruments collected by the young musicians of the mid-60 ' pawn shops, etc. very cheap, used, good guitar sound. Therefore, the magnetic force of origin - that is the strength magnet especially when the guitar was manufactured in 1959, is not the desired "effect". The sound you want the "old guitar" heard in the 60, 70, 80, 90 and today.
A lot of effort has been degaussing magnets or find the old ones. Currently my collection of original patent applied magnets Gibson sell for $ 150 + per bag if I let go of one of them. (Only about six left.)
MG: Is the magnetic field weakens over time also make sounds softer and fatter?
DT: This is easy, yes. But the magnetic field has a life long enough. Even the old pick-up we commonly see, such as "Charlie Christian" found on the 1939 Gibson pickup with cobalt magnets have more than enough flow to date. Great Jazz Barney Kessel used to bring in far too famous Gibson with the Charlie Christian pickup.
Those huge, very old magnets were still very strong recovery and the best (he had several) was very high impedance 10,000 ohms. This pickup sounded absolutely wonderful, magical musical instrument. A large number of experiments was done in the years 80 pick by many manufacturers, with stronger magnets or exotic.
But the point of diminishing returns has been reached instantly. Stronger magnets can produce a strong pickup with more output, but the pull chain excess caused depreciation, which pulls the strings to pitch for the microphones were should be placed low enough how thin string, reversing most of the improvements. Exotic magnets did not sound as nice as the alnico wider range of flows or ceramic magnets.
MG: Have hum-bucking coil, or simply wear out faster and why?
DT: A tough one. Single coil, such as Start pickups die more often, but usually due to damage. It is not difficult at all to wear from the top of a pickup cover and begin to damage the coil. P-90 type single-use coil hum-bucking magnets (2) and a coil form plastic, so we have a cross on the structure of picking between snoring and P-90-bucker.
The cylindrical magnets of the truck start and Telecaster had a lot of flow and life will last several times if they are not damaged. The first guitars still sound spectacular. Jerry Garcia replaced the hum-bucking pickups DiMarzio said they had used frequently, but the microphones were moving here in the San Francisco area, and do not seem to have lost anything noticeable. But musical perception is much, much more sensitive then any instrument.
Do not listen to their new brand, it is impossible to hear what Jerry heard. By their nature, one coil can wear faster than the magnets are no longer subject the murderer a magnet, a shock of being hit by a pick, strings etc.
MG: With your handle some of the microphones today's top players, they think twice before throwing their singles or hums, or even go to another company for the restoration?
TD: I used to encourage professionals and enthusiasts consider keeping vintage microphones in place if they provide the type of tone they want. I think the guitar feels right, but does not sound right, the new hand-wound or microphones or ourselves and all the other manufacturers can be selected with the appropriate knobs, the tone controls, etc.
To fine-tune the guitar to do exactly what you want, without killing a nice vintage guitar, many advantages are the selection of new guitars, or imports of good quality (Ibanez, Aria, Cort etc) so that they can make as many changes as they wish and have several identical guitars at hand, without the high cost of super vintage instruments. Restorations are done if microphones were severely damaged, dead or partially dead or in some cases - when they just look shabby, ugly.
The rust can be removed and / or new screws and studs pole piece adjustment to hum-saws, delicate work with steel wool can cleaning strategy - TV magnets. Most restaurants have died vintage (microphones valuable) to bring them back to life without losing their own music.
Broken coils are the main problem by far. With a very good eye, steady hand, and knowing exactly what to look for the broken wire coil can be located and attached without losing more than one or two ohms of a pick-up 5000 Ohms.
The most difficult this process can not find the broken wire. It is treating it after it found. Usually you only have one chance. The wire is covered with insulation that must be removed before you can re-welding. Since the wire is thinner than a hair, and in some cases it works with just 1 / 16 th in the wire. This is delicate work.
MG: What is the most common type of pickup being replaced?
DT: Right now, it runs at about 55% Strategy - Type of TV and 45% hum-saws, but it is constantly moving fairly well captured by Current popular guitars in the use of TV, concerts and other media.
MG: Is microphones for the restoration of something essential, you should leave it to specialists or guitar luthiers restoration parts?
DT: If the pickup has a high value, so, ask someone with experience. A good eye, practice, and knowing what to look for can save $ 200.00 a patent applied that can be totally destroyed by an experience (or unstable) the hand trying to fix a broken wire of the coil. attention to detail will bring pick-up life as it should be.
MG: When you restore a pick-up are single coils hum-saws or more easy to restore?
DT: Single coils are generally easier - they are simple, everything is out in the open and easy to see it no layers of old band to take off, (a real problem with hum-bucking pickups old) -. But "Funky" type coils only. Harmony, Silvertone, Danelectro, Kay etc. are really difficult to restore because they are often made on a budget.
Cardboard forms coil, glue and masking tape are used in the assembly difficult to dig through. Some of those old cheap guitars do not even have the forms of the coil. Just a wire coil and magnet. It is often difficult to say what he was supposed to be first!
MG: Is there special ways of potting, re-magnetization or rewinding of a pick-up is improving its tone and sustain with respect to pull the string?
TD: I would not say "special means" as much as the application of good technique all these technologies. Potting or repotting in wax (or polish) must be at the right temperature so that the wax absorbs all the coil but not so hot that it melted a coil for Tricky re-pots. But once you have the right is easily repeated.
This will prevent microphonics, allowing the collection of work a volume level much higher, without grinding. Re-magnetization can improve or restore the tone of a magnet damaged. Shock can demagnetize enough so that the magnet does not produce a signal. In this case, re-magnetization will bring it to life.
Often more powerful magnets, such as Alnico 5 is demagnetized or redesigned to lower "aged" level, to reduce the tensile cords and get the effect we hear vintage guitar.
A fairly efficient process that could increase the sustain of a van given. But with our new stock Alnico 2 magnets, it is often easier to simply install a lower flux Alnico 2 magnet in place of an Alnico 5 magnetic attraction for the low, soft tones. Liquidation is another Pickup history. Most "classic" guitars made in the pick-up of the 50 had hand injury to some degree.
In a conversation with Doc Kauffman, Leo Fender original partner, he told me it was some time before he and Leo thought "maybe we should measure these microphones? "
By wrapping a truck to get a good vintage tone a "scatter wound" technique works over best. The is not provided absolutely perfect, but a bit random, filling the coil to the eye as it spins. This gives the pick-up tone more harmonic - not so perfect is often musical. Hum-bucking pickups, to have two coils are essentially asymmetrical in the original design of Gibson. Each coil has a different load of iron, so a different impedance. If the coils themselves are not exactly equal, there is an effect on the quality of Again, less than perfection and harmony due to the slightly different tones of each coil.
In addition, the distance between the two coils receive the signal guitar string in different places (called phase cancellation) gives the hum-bucking pickup its distinct character. These factors can be manipulated to vary the tone of the pickup in very extreme degree.
DiMarzio is clever enough to develop More and more new sounds using techniques like this, (and many others.) Observation dozens of patents applied for real Gibson humbuckers, show coils that are "close enough", but not accurate when read with Digital Meters Vom, that was not available when they were made.
MG: When wiring a pick-up are all techniques used to give your guitar a tone depending on the type of music you play?
DT: This is one of our specialties. In addition to all the variations of microphones, we have discussed, we have introduced the concept of varying the pots to increase or reduce the load on the pickup, changing the frequency response, gain and tone.
We are also a series of controls passive medium that can be applied to any guitar to give the musician even further tonal range of the "same old" pick-up. One can start with new pickups or custom and to further optimize for their own use, or work with existing microphones by varying the volume controls, tone and wiring harness.
MG: Do higher prices for vintage microphones make it more attractive to restore the originals?
DT: Certainly, and my clients, friends are always looking guitar that "does not work." Restoration often do not cost a lot of success and we have about 90% of the trucks dead. The balance is rewound. Very few are rejected, perhaps two a year from hundreds. Find a pick-up and dead have restored or even rewound is certainly the cheapest way to get "sound".
