River Cruises Become Alternative Whilst Jamaican Port Fails To Open
With America and Europe suffering a succession of 'big freezes', tourists are inevitably looking to get away to sunnier climes. Simultaneously, 2011 is starting to look like a cruise season fit to burst with cash rewards for all involved. This is all bad news for Jamaica, who are having significant troubles putting the finishing touches to their Falmouth cruise ship port. A combination of slow progress and labour strikes has put the completion date back by at least a month, ensuring that Royal Caribbean Cruises ships scheduled to dock there won't be able to do so. Montego Bay was the alternative destination for the Navigator of the Seas, Royal Caribbean's ship originally intended to be the first arrival at Falmouth. The Caribbean economy could use every helping hand it can get at this point, and pushing the first disembarkation date back to February 17th will mess up already tight schedules that will see even more cruise traffic than last year. With the usual bout of later year weather issues, it could be a needlessly rough year for Caribbean cruises. Lines and passengers don't have to settle for this on River cruises, to say the least of it.
And River cruising isn't the non-sequitur it may seem to be either. It's not a downmarket version of the traditional ocean cruise, and it's shaping up to be a very valid alternative. When you're cruising in the Caribbean, you expect brilliant weather as a matter of course. But it's also a lot more effective as a cultural taster than simply going from port city to port city on the continent. But since cruise rivers are often hundreds or thousands of miles long, they offer a greater cross-section of a much larger nation. Natural beauty is something the Caribbean certainly doesn't lack, neither is culture. But with a greater range of urban centres, ancient sites and topography, River cruises are just that tiny bit more interesting. They also cater to a more traditional cruise crowd. Young couples with children are doubtlessly the most important cruise passengers for a region that is vivacious and active. But temperate, slower paced climates are far more universally appreciated. Older couples and Older people particularly enjoy them. When this kind of traveller is looking for a cruise, Rhine river cruises are ideal.
