Assuming no air friction, what velocity would a craft require to be launched at from the earths surface to?
get to low orbit height and low orbit orbit.
Just wondering whether a craft could be launched from a slingshot method using a mile-diameter vertical circle tunnel carved out of a mountain. It would be evacuated of air, magentic propultion would accelerate the device around the loop many times to allow it to pick up enough speed before being released out of a gap and shot into space.
You would need to obtain minimal orbital velocity not escape velocity (approximately 17,500 mph). Due to the strong vertical component of the velocity (which would be necessary), you would need a correction thrust in flight.(not much) Otherwise, the satellite would hit the Earth on the first orbit. (in other words, perigee would be too low).
